Buying a new home? What’s on your kitchen wish list?

By October 20, 2021No Comments

If you are buying a new home, you’ll probably have a list of things you are looking for. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms are a given. But what about your new kitchen? Read on to discover what you should consider.

There’s no debate about the importance of a kitchen in any home and when you are looking to buy, you will have a list of things you want in your new kitchen. But our suggestion is to keep an open-mind about the kitchen you’re looking for. If the home meets most of your criteria, you can always redesign and renovate the kitchen to create exactly what you want.

When buying a new home, what should you look for in a new kitchen?

Would you like an island bench?

Island benches are hugely popular and can provide the extra benefit of additional seating but not everyone loves an island. If they are too big, the centre can be difficult to clean. They can also become a dumping ground for the whole family’s “stuff”. But they are a great workspace and a marvellous way to ensure your kitchen is part of the living space.

What about a butler’s pantry?

Very few homes have a butler’s pantry but they provide extraordinary storage opportunities – especially with open shelving – without the worry of whether it looks neat. So when looking for your new home, if a butler’s pantry is on your kitchen wish list, look for ways to create additional space.

Do you like lots of bench space?

One of the reasons island benches are so popular is because they provide lots of bench space. But they aren’t the only way to create amble working areas in your kitchen. When you are looking for a new home, consider how much bench space the existing kitchen has and whether a smarter kitchen design could create the room you need.

What are the kitchen appliances like?

Older homes will often have older appliances and they may not be the size or type you want – especially the refrigerator. If you want a double or over-sized oven or a large, family-sized refrigerator, buy a house with a kitchen that’s ready for a renovation. Then you can custom-build your kitchen to suite the appliances you want.

Would you like a breakfast nook?

With open plan living, the breakfast nook has disappeared but it can provide a wonderful, informal dining area for meals with the kids or coffee with friends. Breakfast nooks are particularly useful for young families as mealtimes can be a little messy. If you love the home but hate the kitchen, a renovation could provide you with a breakfast nook you’ll adore.

Look for the possibilities!

Buying an established home means you can have the location and bones of the home you want, with the ability to transform it into the home of your dreams.

So when looking for your new home, don’t look at the kitchen that’s there. Imagine the kitchen you could have. If your new home is on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, you need to talk to the team at Collaroy Kitchen Centre. They’ll help you design the kitchen you want and build it using the highest quality materials so it will continue to look good for years to come.
