Texture gives a room interest, character and oomph. It’s one of the super heroes of design. But how do you add texture to your kitchen, bathroom or laundry? Simply follow our 7 tips.

When designing any room, it’s important to use texture to add interest, character and oomph. For living, dining and bedrooms, adding texture is easy because you can use rugs, cushions, window furnishings and the like. But when designing a kitchen, bathroom or laundry, adding texture becomes more challenging.

If you are planning to renovate your kitchen, bathroom or laundry, consider our 7 tips to create your own texture super hero in the space.

Texture Tip 1:  Use dramatically patterned tiles on your floor, wall or splashback. It will draw your eye and become a feature of the room. Patterned tiles can also help small spaces appear larger – especially if you use the same tile on the floor and a feature wall.

Texture Tip 2:  Mix and combine different materials like timber and marble, metals or mirror finishes. For example:

  • Use highly grained timber to give your kitchen island the look of a bespoke designed piece of furniture
  • Use metal finishes in your kitchen rangehood canopy, door handles, taps or splashbacks
  • Add coloured mesh fronts to cabinets – especially upper cabinets

Texture Tip 3:  Choose tiles with interesting shapes like hexagons, arabesque, penny rounds, diamond, arrow, fish scale etc. They will add subtle texture – even in a neutral tone. For bathrooms, don’t forget to include a shower niche for instant texture. Or make it a texture bombshell by using a different shaped or coloured tile inside the niche.

Texture Tip 4:  Add texture with WOW by selecting handmade tiles. The natural imperfections in shape and colour will add a subdued hint of texture to mesmerise your eyes.

Texture Tip 5:  Make the ordinary look extraordinary by taking simple rectangular or square tiles and lay them in a different way. Popular patterns for square or rectangular shaped tiles include:

  • Herringbone
  • Off-set (aka brick pattern)
  • Chevron
  • Basket weave
  • Grid or harlequin (if using 2 different tile colours like classic black and white)

Texture Tip 6:  Nooks, niches and open shelves add texture and interest – not only due to their shape but also because of the things you can place on them. Sure each one can be used as handy storage in your kitchen, bathroom or laundry. But they can also be used to feature textured décor items like shells, baskets and metal or timber objects.

Texture Tip 7:  Don’t forget your ceilings. A really popular feature at the moment is timber clad ceilings. They can be painted, stained or left raw, depending on the look you are after. Ceilings can also be raised to provide cathedral or vaulted ceilings or you can simply add faux beams to provide depth and therefore texture.
