Once upon a time, white was the epitome of a stylish kitchen. But times change and quite frankly, white is no longer a safe option. Instead, kitchens are a central part of every home’s entertaining area so they need to WOW. Learn what’s hot in kitchen design.

Once upon a time, white was the epitome of a stylish kitchen. But times change and quite frankly, white is no longer a safe option.

Why?

Because kitchens are now a central part of every home’s entertaining area. As a result, the cabinetry and benchtops need to look more like furniture than a kitchen workspace. For those who have room to include a butler’s pantry, the hard work occurs in this private space and the kitchen is where the fun happens.

Colour in your kitchen is the key to creating a unique space

With this change of focus, colour has become increasingly important and an easy way to create a truly individual kitchen. For those who like neutral tones in their kitchen, consider using greys or whites as a backdrop and adding pops of colour on your:

  • Island
  • Benchtops
  • Splashbacks
  • Lower cabinets or
  • Upper cabinets

Colour can also be used to create kitchen zones such as dining, pantry storage and cooking zones. Mixing colour in this way will add visual interest to your kitchen.

Why choose white for the interior of your glass-doored cabinets? They can be a great place to add a vibrant burst of colour, a timber feature (faux or real) or a dramatic backdrop to showcase your favourite glassware or serveware.

Another option is to go bold with your marble or stone benchtops. Think dramatic colours, swirls or patterns and use a hue from the benchtop as your cabinet colour. This will provide a stylish, cohesive and totally unique kitchen.

There’s no need to feel pressured into picking one style of benchtop. You can mix this up by using one colour on your island and another for your work surfaces. Just imagine how classic but daring charcoal or black cabinets would look with white benchtops for your work surfaces and white cabinets with dark benchtop for your island. Or vice versa.

Don’t forget your splashback?

Another great place to add a spot of colour and WOW factor is the splashback. Again, a striking marble or stone splashback can add impact. But brightly colour or boldly patterned tiles are also making a comeback. You can even find retro or reproduction tiles that will add WOW to any kitchen. So will mirrored splashbacks.

For those who love a glam look, consider using antique-finished mirror splashbacks and use the metallic colour from the mirror in your tapware, handles and lighting.

Timber splashbacks are also emerging as a new trend. If you prefer to balance practicality with your love of timber, you may want to use timber-look tiles.

Danish furniture meets Aussie custom cabinetry

It may surprise you to learn that our Director began his career as an apprentice furniture maker at one of Denmark’s oldest and most renown custom furniture makers. He now uses this skill, artistry and perfectionist’s eye for detail to design and make bespoke kitchens right here on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

That’s why our clients feel so confident in our ability to bring their kitchen ideas to life, while still retaining the functionality every kitchen requires. It’s also why you’ll work directly with our designers – not salespeople – because they understand what every busy kitchen needs.

If you want a kitchen that seamlessly integrates into the other entertaining areas of your home and is a true reflection of your unique sense of style, contact Collaroy Kitchen Centre.

Luxury Design Idea #4: Powerpoints

Laundries need powerpoints and lots of them – not just for the washer and dryer. If you have a stick vacuum cleaner or integrated ironing board, you’ll also need powerpoints in those cupboards. You might want powerpoints for recharging torches and power tools like drills.

Don’t skimp on the number of powerpoints you have in your laundry. You may regret it later.

Luxury Design Idea #5: Bench space is incredibly important for laundries

Imagine how much easier things would be if you had a dedicated space to fold clothes and linen. Too often laundries are designed without bench space. But benches are incredibly important in a laundry and will make it much easier when you take items out of the dryer.

Luxury Design Idea #6: Design your laundry for your life

Laundries aren’t just a place to wash and dry your clothes. They can become dedicated drop zones for the family’s sporting equipment and shoes to ensure the rest of your home remains neat and clean. What about coat hooks to hang damp coats and rails for hanging clothes as you iron them?

If you have pets, perhaps you might like to add a bath area for them or dry food storage bins, pet sleeping or eating areas. If you have a swimming pool or live near the beach, you might also like to include a separate shower or toilet.

That’s the great thing about laundries. They can be adapted to suit the life you want to live.
