We don’t know what to do about our kitchen. It’s totally dysfunctional!

A badly designed and dysfunctional kitchen can be a misery. But for this Narrabeen couple, renovating the kitchen wasn’t straight forward. Learn how we created their dream kitchen.

A badly designed and dysfunctional kitchen can be a misery…

This was certainly the case for one of our clients in Narrabeen on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Their kitchen was so tiny, only one person at a time could fit and a lot of the main cupboards were located in corners. This made it impossible to access anything stored at the back of their cupboards.

But extending the kitchen wasn’t that easy because the area was located in the centre of their home between their dining and living rooms. Plus, there was an essential structural post that severely limited their ability to increase the size of their kitchen.

So they came to us to investigate their options and spoke directly with one of our designers, BRION.

“How do you want to use your kitchen?”

After listening to all the challenges this Narrabeen kitchen was giving them, our designer asked the couple about how they wanted to use their kitchen. Their list wasn’t complicated. They wanted a kitchen where:

  • They could entertain guests and have family over
  • They could cook with ease
  • There was plenty of storage for everything
  • They could enjoy a drink and store their wine
  • There was room for more than one person at a time

Most importantly, they wanted a kitchen that was uncluttered and a pleasure to be in.

How we created their dream kitchen…

First, we kept the structural beam where it was and instead, built a peninsula bench beyond the beam to create more storage and preparation space. That way it no longer limited the size of the kitchen.

Next, we added a large pantry with internal drawers so they can easily access everything. We even included an automatic light that turns on when the pantry door is opened and turns off when the door is closed.

We replaced those terrible corner cupboards with large, spacious drawers and cabinets with built-in slits to perfectly hold baking trays and chopping boards. To ensure the kitchen always looks uncluttered and streamlined, we included an appliance cabinet with powerpoints. Now our clients’ coffeemaker, kettle, toaster etc. are all hidden from view when not in use.

Even their new sink is sleek and stylish in white with a stainless steel trim.

When our designer first revealed the plans for their new kitchen, the Narrabeen couple were amazed at how closely Brio was listening. They now had a bar area between their kitchen and dining area – complete with wine fridge, mirror backsplash, glass shelf for storing spirits and glass door upper cabinets.

In addition, beneath the upper cabinets in the bar area and over the hotplates we installed strip lights to add extra functional lighting. Plus they now have a skylight to ensure their kitchen is always bright and light.

To add warmth and contrast, the upper cabinets over the hotplates and the external panels of the peninsula benches are timber laminate to beautifully complement the black butt timber floorboards. These upper cabinets open and close automatically with a simple touch.
