No-one wants a small, cramped bathroom. With clever design, you can create the illusion of space without compromising on storage. The design team at Collaroy Kitchen Centre share their 5 favourite tips to make your bathroom look big and luxurious. Read on.
While best known for our kitchens, Collaroy Kitchen Centre also designs and builds bathrooms. These bathrooms have come in all shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common. Every design needed to be functional, attractive and give the illusion of space.
In this blog, our experienced bathroom design team share their 5 favourite tips on how to make your bathroom look bigger than it really is.
Tip 1: Don’t limit your colour palette to white!
While it may seem counter-intuitive, using dark colours in a small bathroom can actually create a sense of depth to the room, which in turn, will make your bathroom look larger.
Tip 2: Carefully consider how your tiles will be laid
Consider these clever tiling options for your new bathroom design:
- Laying rectangular tiles horizontally will help a narrow bathroom seem wider.
- Using the same floor tiles in your shower base will help a small bathroom look bigger – especially if you incorporate a clear glass, frameless shower screen.Another on trend look is to take your floor tiles up the wall to create a feature. This will trick your eyes into thinking your bathroom is larger than it really is.
- To gain the illusion of a higher ceiling, lay your tiles from floor to ceiling.
Tip 3: Be clever with your storage design
Every bathroom needs generous storage but in a small bathroom you need to be creative to ensure your storage doesn’t encroach onto valuable floor space. That’s where built-in shower niches, shaving cabinets and wall mounted vanities all help create the illusion that your bathroom is bigger than it really is – without compromising on valuable storage space.
Tip 4: Large mirrors are your friend
The smaller your bathroom, the greater the impact a large mirror can give you. Think vanity wide mirrors or mirrors that run to the ceiling. If your bathroom has a window, and it makes sense from a design perspective, place your mirror opposite the window to double the natural light. Another great option is to use multiple mirror shaving cabinets to maximise your storage while providing a large mirrored area on your wall.
Tip 5: Go monochrome on your walls and ceiling
If you prefer to use light colours in your bathroom (such as white or pale grey), consider matching your ceiling colour to the colour of your wall tiles. This works particularly well if you choose to tile from floor to ceiling.
